Info On Basic Progression Of Youth Player
Topic: March 08, 2021, 06:45:10 AM
Athletic 5yo who is showing interest in ice hockey. Not a hockey family and therefore don’t have the familiarity with the youth hockey scene. Both parents have college level coaching experience with other sports. So we do get the general youth sport world very well.

In a non-Covid world 5yo would have played basketball and wrestled but neither were available. Only thing around was floor hockey which went well - funny how things work!  With a continued interest and no other winter sports being scheduled we signed up for Learn to Skate at a local Skate Zone.  Pointless, no instruction and basically a free skate.  Became comfortable on skates so signed up for the Rookie Learn to Play at local Skate Zone.  Again, not much instruction but understand due to high numbers and lack of coaches. Comparing him to the others in the program, and knowing he is likely the youngest we enrolled in “Future Flyers” which I believe is the next level of learn to play.  Both sessions are back/back.  That begins in a few weeks.

Where do we go from here... Hockey will not be the only activity, firm believers in multi sport athletes. Let’s move past the “he’s 5”; “let him have fun”; “you’ll know when your kid is ready”; “Burn out” responses.  I’m looking for honest answers on how often skating; what skating level is appropriate for in house leagues; what age should in house stop and travel begin.  Again, no hockey background but I would think skating is the most important skill to learn at a young age before the game itself. If you can’t skate, you can’t play in my book.  If that’s the case, where and who teaches the skating in Southern NJ...

If you already see that there is basically no instruction and that it's a free for all move on to a different program and rink now. It won't get better there. Hollydell and the Igloo are not far from any Skate Zone. Start him out in a house league for mites and see how he likes it. If he does well and wants more then look into travel. If he wants more after travel look into private or small group lessons with a skating coach. No need to rush him at such a young age. Hockey should be all about development, building confidence and having fun at his age. When looking at travel teams take into consideration what each program offers for the cost of tuition. And if possible stay away from parent coaches. A good team and program is not only about the wins and losses. Good luck and let him have fun.

Two things...

1. Spend some time browsing the USA Hockey American Development Model website ADM Kids

2. If you and your wife can skate, even a little, strongly considering obtaining your USA Hockey Level 1 coaching certificate. Then get involved with a youth hockey organization.

Get your child personal skating lessons before s/he develops bad habits. My kids took skating lessons every week for 8 straight years.

more like how much did you waste.  for skating instructors I'd say quality is more important than quantity.

Go to bucks ice, revolution ice or Wintersports. Whichever is closest. Vince Prozzillo runs a great youth learn to skate program.
