CR South Golden Hawks Emergence Stuns The SHSHL

The SHSHL’s forgotten team has emerged as the last man standing to leave both CB South and North Penn scratching their heads wondering where they went wrong. Forgotten; too harsh? Maybe, but getting the last laugh; most definitely!

To quote the infamous Japanese Imperial Naval Officer, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve".

That quote would characterize how CR South came to life and banded together at the end of the season and into the playoffs.

Two post-season playoff games against league opposition with better records served to show which team is the league’s top dog. It's not always the standings or the number of wins that define you. The Golden Hawks lost a pair of games against both the CB South Titans and North Penn Knights during the regular season. Two of which were non-league and didn't affect their overall league record, but the 4 losses did affect their Flyers Cup ranking. These factors would not derail their determination or their task they set out to accomplish. The Golden Hawks won the 2020 SHSHL Class AA Varsity championship on Thursday night in convincing fashion. Leaving no doubt in the minds of the rest of the league, this is a very dangerous hockey team.

Take note, they’re on a run and looking now toward the big prize, the Flyers Cup.

Coach, Joe Houk assembled this team, building it specifically for big games like this in which the top line wouldn't be the main factor that would define its team’s overall collective success. Houk is a firm believer that you need back end lines to win the "important ones". Much like the semi-final game against North Penn, Houk's game plan included speed, stamina, quick line changes, and defense. Rock controlled the game from beginning to end, suffocating CB South's deadly offense made up of almost entirely seniors. To say the CB South skaters were frustrated would be an understatement, high flying senior forward, and captain, Colin Abbonizio was held scoreless, which isn’t common. The CR South defenders and back checkers kept Abbonizio and his linemates at bay all game, leaving little room for error. What shots did get through were mainly from the perimeter or from the point and were mostly low-quality opportunities. Goalie Jimmy Sweeney was on his game leaving next to no rebounds or second chances around the crease. Rebounds were quickly gobbled up by the steadfast defensemen eliminating any additional threat. Though CB South did manage to light the lamp with around 3 minutes to go in regulation, it was too little, too late. CR South would hold off the high powered CB offense and win the game, 3-1.

Credit the team’s coach, Joe Houk, and his core group of players, Michael Roby, Antti Autere, Billy Harrelson, David Mueller, Brennan Wright and Jimmy Sweeney for not allowing their team to sway from its course.
