I don't think it's any different anywhere. It's common for kids to drop out as the hitting and physical play gets tougher. We are in Illinois and it's the same problems.

It’s worse now. Kids are too soft. Bunch of woke babies. When I was in HS @ St. Augustine  all I wanted to do was check and drop the gloves.

Bantam is a tough level to build teams. Players try out at multiple clubs, and each org counts on not only keeping everyone who tries out, but also recruiting a few extras to 'round out the teams'. If every player attends tryouts for two clubs, that is twice as many tryouts as actual players.

Same with Peewees here.  They all vanished.  Before evals I was expecting 3 teams, but we’ve got 2.  Lost about 10 kids and another local team lost a team’s worth of Peewees too....probably even more because I know a few of our former kids went there.

It's thin at U16 too, though 2006 seems to have always been a small year.  I don't have data to back it up but I would guess that there are several factors.  You have some folks who still aren't back to work and a couple grand for hockey isn't in the cards.  You have kids who didn't play at all last year for whatever reason and ended up not missing it as much as they thought they would or they got into other activities.

What I would like to know is which kids are the kids that disappeared.  Is it the high end kids, the middle tier kids, or the low end B/B American level kids who were just doing it for fun in the first place?

The good kids are not dropping out, it's the kids that are not good and finally gave up and got frustrated b/c the gap widened.  Just the way it is...as in all sports, except hockey is a bit tougher to do "just for fun"
