This is Tyler, one of the tournament directors for the Mid Atlantic Summer Showcase. A decision for weekend 2 of the event (Aug 28-30) will be made by Friday AM at the latest. Weekend 1 (Aug 21-23) was unfortunately cancelled and an email was sent to managers and coaches for all teams. A full version of the email can be read below and it is also posted on our website at Mid Atlantic Hockey

(Aug 14, 2020) SHOWCASE UPDATE: WEEKEND ONE CANCELED, WEEKEND TWO TBD
The Mid Atlantic Summer Showcase has made the unfortunate decision to cancel all divisions scheduled to play during the tournament's first weekend of play: August 21-23. Due to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's guidance and limitations that only permit up to 25 people indoors (COVID-19 Guidance for Sports), USA Hockey's Atlantic District will no longer sanction any game played within the State that does not adhere to this occupancy guidance. Without USA Hockey sanctioning, it would be irresponsible for us to host any form of tournament play - we simply cannot do it.

At the moment, USA Hockey and the Atlantic District are currently lobbying the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to raise this permitted occupancy to a higher number, such as 50, which would permit games. We are not sure if this is attainable but nonetheless would like to delay our decision regarding the second weekend of games from August 28-30. We will send out an update regarding Weekend #2 (divisions being played August 28-30) no later than Friday, August 21, 2020. Please know that we have been, and are continuing to explore every option to successfully execute the tournament.

Originally, after consulting multiple sources, we were confident that our original health and safety procedures plan would provide a safe environment for our participants. We still feel that this is true, especially given the geographical home location of our participating teams. Unfortunately, this a moot point without sanctioning from USA Hockey and an adjustment to the Commonwealth's above guidelines.

As former players and current coaches, we additionally do not believe in only allowing a portion of a team to play in each game, period, or half in order to maintain a 25-person headcount. Dividing rosters drives a wedge between teams rather than collectively bringing players together, which is what is needed during these trying times. Among other reasons, we do not feel this format is an honest and acceptable alternative method to play the game and we will not venture down this path.

All payments for teams that were slated to play in the first weekend  (Aug 21-23) will be 100% refunded – no questions asked. Please allow 7-14 days for this process. Payments will be refunded in the order that they were received. The same option will be in place for teams participating in the second weekend (Aug 28-30) if a cancellation is implemented.

Looking forward, we plan to be back at our host facilities when permitted by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and sanctioned by USA Hockey. Although not definite, we are targeting MLK Day weekend (Jan 15-18) for the potential inaugural Mid Atlantic Winter Showcase. We hope that occupancy numbers will be lifted, fans will be permitted, snack areas will be open, and college coaches will be in attendance. Please keep an eye out for communications from us as this situation progresses. We would be honored again to have you as a guest.

Finally, thank you to our rink partners for their continued communication, openness, and flexibility. We hope that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania can see how much more the hockey community is adversely affected right now compared to other sports, and hope that they can adjust accordingly. Losing games and opponents as teams travel to other outside districts for haphazardly planned events and non-sanctioned play is not the answer. Allowing for a safe, well thought-out, and planned approach within our trusted facilities for our players to play, is.

This is commendable.

will you want them to use an air horn to stop play instead of their whistle?

That sounds pretty cool, let's do it.

We sent an email to all participating teams last night announcing the cancellation of the 2020 Mid Atlantic Summer Showcase. A copy of this can be read on Mid Atlantic Hockey, but we have also pasted it below.

Openly this message is not fun to write or read, but we have made the unfortunate decision to cancel the remaining weekend of play of the Mid Atlantic Summer Showcase (August 28-30). After exhausting all options to safely play, we still cannot proceed due to the current guidelines within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the inability to gain USA Hockey/Atlantic District sanctioning.

Together, we stand firmly with our tournament partners and still believe all points made in our prior message to be true. We believe that our original health and safety plan would have kept athletes safe. We believe that our rink partners would have done their job to provide a safe, sanitized environment. And finally, we still believe that teams should not need to be divided, shrunk, or shortened in order to play a game. Our goal will always be to operate a fun, safe, and competitive tournament and we will not take shortcuts in order to do so.

Again, all payments will be refunded with no questions asked. We appreciate all who have stayed on board and have ridden this unexpected roller coaster of a ride. We originally had the opportunity to provide something special for our tournament’s players, coaches, and families, and we are thankful for everyone’s support and patience during this process.

Although this door is closing for our 2020 event, we are excited to announce the opening of the inaugural Mid Atlantic Winter Showcase being held during the four-day-weekend of January 15-18, 2021 (MLK Weekend). We are currently confirming ice availability and will have division openings and registration availability in the next couple of weeks. Our website at Mid Atlantic Hockey will be updated, and we will pass along further information.

Again, thank you for all your patience and support. We are looking forward to the day where Pennsylvania will permit safe, fun, and USA Hockey sanctioned play within our trusted facilities for our players to play in.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to reach out.

Kudos on not making a last second call.  I've seen it where stuff gets canceled when people are already on the move or in hotels.
