Tier 2 Evaluation/Tryout Fee
Topic: April 04, 2021, 06:37:46 PM
Noticing more and more tier 2 with a $75 -100 evaluation/tryout fee.  I thought all tier 2 organizations were just an evaluation since you make a team.  Is there a tryout loop hole that you can leave the org if you don't like the situation.  Or is this just a way for tier 2 / blackbear to get more money.

By trying out, are you agreeing to accept the roster spot if offered?  What if one doesn't make the team?

This is what the tryout form indicates for my child:

Upon signing this contract, I am agreeing for my child to accept a roster position....

Yes. By trying out you are agreeing to whatever they offer you, AA to B. In the DVHL you are agreeing to pay the season fee by being evaluated.

Thanks.  My son took a few years off and now wants to play again. I just dont remember a tryout fee, thought that was a tier1 only thing.

Most DVHL clubs required a large $300-500 payment prior to try outs, basically your first payment. If you got cut, that money was given back to you. Now, it seems like everyone is now doing a small try out fee instead of taking a large payment up front. I know our club credited this to your total payment once you made the team so you aren't paying anything extra. I guess the kids that get cut are the ones that are out that money.

I believe starting with 14U you're not guaranteed to make a roster, gets tougher as the kids get older since there are fewer teams at each age group.

Technically, even at the younger ages they can cut you. They just have to be able to find you option somewhere else like an in house team. My son's first year of club there was like 12 kids cut from squirts. Even though it was enough kids to field a team, they just didn't have enough ice slots to handle a 4th team.

Clubs usually use the waitlist to put excess players on hold at that age.  They should know going in how many teams they're going to field, they let returning players register then fill in the gaps with waitlist, they shouldn't have let 12 kids skate if they didn't have a roster spot available.  At 14U there isn't a waitlist, you're trying out and can get cut.
