A Battle of the Birds in Bristol, Falcons vs Golden Hawks

Pennsbury Falcons on the power play in the second period.

BRISTOL, PA - It’s a bit early in the season to proclaim a showdown between the SHSHL’s potential finalists, but some would say that’s just what the game between Council Rock South and Pennsbury was, and it didn’t disappoint. The game started with a fevered pitch, each team skating, hitting and battling as the play went both ways with intensity. Shots on goal weren’t that plentiful though, ending just 9-6 in favor of the Golden Hawks for the period, as each team blocked shots and broke up rushes. The highlight of the period was a great save by Hawks goalkeeper Carson Lopez on a Pennsbury breakaway, the Falcons ever a team looking for the stretch pass. The period would end scoreless, but not lack in entertainment value.

Council Rock got on the board in the second period on a great tip in by Blaize Pepe, Ilya Kidzinau spotting Pepe and making a perfect shot pass for the goal. After that goal the play would slow as both teams finally tried to catch their breath. The Golden Hawks would go on a four-minute power play after the Falcons Sean Taggart lost his cool and got the cross-check/roughing combo. Bobby Gilbert would cash in, again on a great shot-pass and tip play, this time it was Chase Tovsky providing the great assist. The Hawks rolled after that and Pennsbury goaltender Aaron McDaniel battled hard to keep his team in the game, the Rock outshooting Pennsbury 12-5 in the period.

The slow play would continue in the third period, but the Falcons were able to draw a penalty and give themselves a chance to get back in it on the power play. They would clang one hard off the post, but come up empty, missing several opportunities as the puck just couldn’t find their stick. Eleven seconds after the power play expired, Chris Sarver, who was everywhere for the Falcons, got them on the board with a shot from the high slot that deflected off of a Council Rock defenseman and squeaked through Lopez’s five hole. Pennsbury was back in it; that is until Kevin Koles restored the two-goal lead for the Golden Hawks after a crazy net mouth scramble that saw the Hawks miss an empty net twice, hit the post, and get two shots blocked by Pennsbury defenders. Eventually the puck bounced out to Koles who managed to find the twine and make it 3-1. Pennsbury wouldn’t quit and managed to up their effort, but South patiently defended and kept the Falcons from any serious scoring chances to end the game. Final shot totals were in favor of Council Rock at 30-19, but the game was much closer than that total would suggest. The battle of the birds, and potential finalists, would go to the Hawks, who played well and deserved the victory.
