The Suburban High School Hockey League American Division Preview

LANSDALE, PA. - Head Coach Ken Brzozowski and his staff are poised to get the 2022-2023 Suburban High School Hockey League season underway as the Abington Ghosts, (12-0 league play and 16-2 overall) return a heavy lineup of upperclassmen to defend their American Division title. The Ghosts blazed through their schedule with an undefeated regular season, capturing the best record title. They didn't stop there, as the Ghost Icemen also won the Class A SHSHL Title. This team is setup to make another run in an effort to duplicate their previous season's achievements. Sam Nemac will lead net minding responsibilities. The team’s leading scorer, Matt Kramer and second leading scorer Pat Stelacio both return and should figure to be important contributors to the team’s success. Abington’s defense is anchored by steady senior leadership.

The Plymouth Whitemarsh Colonials, (11-5-0) will have a different look behind the bench this season, as they welcome their new skipper, Dave Cox. The Colonials and Trojans tied with the same (9-4-0) regular season record last season but because of better goals for, and goals against averages the Colonials took possession of second place in the American division. Plymouth-Whitemarsh will rely on the strength of Senior goalie, Chris Maslij between the pipes, while Senior’s Matt Flynn and Jeffrey Mencken look to lead the firepower for the Offense. Conlan Carpenter and Jacob Elgart look to finish out their Senior year with a strong physical presence on the blue line. The Colonials also welcome their new Varsity Head Coach Dave Cox, an alumnus of Plymouth Whitemarsh. Coach Cox is ready to give back to a club that provided him with great memories throughout his high school career.

The Wissahickon Trojans (9-4-0) will be minus three of their top goal scorers in AJ Pounds, and both Nick, and Danny Hussa. Will Hussa, Noland Pounds, and Jason Shandler will be looked upon to do the heavy lifting on offense. Defense will be a joint effort on the back end with the last line of defense holding down the fort in goal will be Fletcher Lynch.

The Quakertown Panthers (7-6-0) will have their work cut out for them this season. After losing much of the team to attrition after the 2021-22 season, the Panthers squad will look to regroup and sustain a full team effort on the ice. Matthew Krem will mind the net, while forwards Jack Diliberto, Cole Slemmer, and Branden McNally will head up the offense. Defense will be a combined effort across the blueline led by Will Shaw.

Newcomers, the Springfield Twp. Spartans have been added to the league and will compete in their first season at Class "A" American division.

Panthers and Hatters will be combining players

Due to a shortage of players in both school districts, the William Tennent Panthers, and Hatboro-Horsham Hatters will combine students and play what is traditionally called an "impure" season. Because of their combined status this team will compete independently and will not be eligible for post season, or the Flyers Cup Tournament.

Upper Dublin vs Bensalem scrimmage.

We are looking into the Upper Dublin Cardinals to find out what their situation is. They played the Bensalem Owls last night in a scrimmage and lost 7-5. They may be playing an independent schedule like the Panthers/Hatters.
