So if that’s the case how can these teams have “pre skates”. This is direct from USA hockey site. And all the coaches are on the ice for these skates.

Can a program hold a pre-tryout, identification camp/skate, or informational meeting prior to the Open Period for players from outside their program?
No. Any type of pre-tryout, or identification camp or skate, skills sessions or similar events for players or parents from outside of the program’s current players, would allow the program to have contact with the program’s coaches, etc., and would constitute improper recruiting of players from outside of the program prior to the Open Period. Pre-tryouts, identification camps, etc., prior to the Open Period, may only be held for the hockey players and/or their parents currently registered with the hockey program.

See the FaQ.  Very unclear from Atlantic’s district and this is what they point you too.

Because they've been getting away with it for years. Most groups that do this think if they run the skate under another program or through the rink it's OK. USA Hockey FAQ clearly states this isn't the case.

This is nothing new. Its done before every tryout. The rink sends their "employees" who everybody knows are part of the organizations in the rink to run the skates. Dad coaches and the "employees" report back to the organization who is new and if the players are any good. Its both cheating and an easy way for the organization to make additional revenue for the management of the org and the rink. They make it sound like if your kid shows up for the pre skates they'll have a better opportunity to make a team. Don't be fooled each teams coach already has their team 80 percent filled before tryouts actually happen. The only way new players to the organization make it is if they are obviously better than existing players or there is an actual spot open. In which case the coach will cut one of the lesser skilled players.

I get all that just seems a bit odd that you can’t openly talk to another team even 48 hours after your season ends/your league championship?  Then the first day you can talk to another coach is the same day as evals/tryouts?

Can’t be right no? So the Atlantic district references the term “open period” so the open period starts the night of tryouts/evals? So In reality there no real open period to find the best option for your kid?

Hmm all seems a bit like you are trapped?
