Try-out Fees

I never understood the need to charge existing players a tryout fee is you are staying with the club, other than a way to extort more money from the parents.
We pay thousands of dollars to play every season and you would think that clubs would want to hold onto their client base. I could understand charging someone new a fee to tryout for the club, but the existing players are already assigned to a team next year, well before tryouts.
The fact that parents think a 3-day (3-hour) tryout is going to determine there child’s placement on a team is a shame.
Youth Hockey Info:
In the DVHL the "fee" is actually the players 1st tuition payment. When they register they are committing to a contract with the club they're trying out for. Other than that, you are correct. Existing club players are already pre-determined which team they will be assigned with the exception of a handful who coaches discuss if they need to be moved to a better or worse team, ie up or down.

A lot of teams hire outside instructors and evaluators to run tryouts. Maybe its to pay them?

As a former president of our organization... tryout fees go to pay for the ice as well as the consultants doing the evaluation. With travel hockey, there is no guarantee, or at least shouldn't be, that you will make the team. It's competition, not recreation. Too many clubs use the parent/coach as the evaluator, and that isn't fair to the other kids trying out. Took awhile to break that at our club. One of our rules, no parents with kids on the ice can evaluate. We also added outside people to come and help evaluate, to keep those of us doing the evals honest. We have a nominal fee of 100 bucks for our tryouts. Helps defray the costs of the practice jersey we give the kids as well as ice and evaluator time.
