Everyone Happy at New Rinks?
Topic: September 23, 2024, 01:23:41 PM
Give an honest assessment of new rink and new teams. Are you happy with your move? Is your new rink a good environment? Are your child and you happy at new rink? Are your child and you happy with new coach?

Do not post crap about old team, rink or coach. Let's get an honest overview if people are happy with there move. There was a ton of movement at all levels in SJ & SEPA.

I stayed at old rink so I have nothing to say. We did have about 40% of players leave for other rinks. Just want to see if people are happy or have regrets. No need to name new rink unless you want.

Most people who leave are just as unhappy in the new rink as they were in the old rink.

It's not the rink, it's you.....

And now you're a club hopper.

Absolutely. Moved 2 seasons ago and my son has thrived in the more competitive environment while his old club deals with the same old politics and underperforming teams.

Rink move has been great been about years.  My player has grown soo much with all the extra clinics and practices the new club has offered.  The old club did not offer any where opportunities this new club has.  The parents have been great.

Not happy at all! Team was sold as top 5 national ranked team. We are lucky to be top 5 in NJ! So called "star" players never pass, try to skate end to end, and never listen to coaches. Assistant coach just screams, parents of "star" players are crazy, and bench gets shortened when playing top teams. Experience has been a nightmare and not even through September. Should never ignored to the rumors and joined another team.  That teams is turning out to be better than this so called top 5 MHR team! We will not repeat the same mistake next season!

Moved son from Tier 1 down to AA pure age at new rink. Level of pla0y except top 2-3 teams is very low. Dissapointed with move and rink management. The grass is not greener!

Hearing a lot of families that moved are unhappy. New teams not as good as they thought, playing time promised by coaches not materializing, level of play disappointing and the most obvious reason they are unhappy: the kids/parents do not like their families, just like their old rinks! Hey parents, the issue is not the rink. You want to know the problem? Look in a mirror!

My son and his buddy left the Phantoms Youth and went to Genesis and couldn't be happier for it. For the 1st time they got a fair shot of making a AA team and made it 2 out of the 3 years there. Their other teammate left at the same time and went to the Rockets, he then left them and went to the Wolfpack and loves it.
Rink politics can ruin a lot for the kids and from what we have seen the Phantoms are the worse. From their travel club to spring league and the Alliance tournament team they had for a year. I know that the spring tournament team and league was technically a Steel Ice thing, but it was run by all the Phantoms people. Hatfield spring league and GOTTA Hockey tournament teams are far better.

I was at the Steel Pub at Steel Ice with some friends last week and noticed the new rink owner wearing a WBS Knights sweater. Not a good look advertising for a club at the rink you own while another club is paying you to play there. Is he saying the Knights are a better club?

My son aged out a couple years ago and he played for a couple clubs(Queen City Royals, LV Rebels, LVPY) and honestly politics unfortunately play a part in all youth sports. He loved the Rebels but wanted to player higher than B American and that's why we went to the Phantoms.

2 things that should change are Evals and parent coaches. Evals should be run by a local college, their coaches and a handful of players that have zero ties to that club whatso ever. NO organization reps/coaches should be involved. Club checks for registration but the evaluators hand out the jersey and would be only one that knows what name goes with what # is given to the club and posted. NO parent coaches for A National/Gretsky and higher above bantam. You want to coach, coach someone else's team but not your kid. A player should not be on a team just because his parent wants to coach A National/Gretsky or higher.

One conclusion I can draw from all the comments in this thread and other threads: One rink will never satisfy everyone. Parents and kids must join a rink that fits them. Whether it is for coaching, level of play, playing time, proximity, etc. Everyone needs to make their own choices. I do have on issue though. I know many parents that stay at their current rink and complain all the time. Rinks forget that the parents are the customers and they should make them happy, not the other way around. To get the balance back, parents should leave enmasse to show who really is in charge.
