First, are you a coach?  I am not asking to preclude you from communicating with them about their play but it does change the dynamic.

Do you have the experience/knowledge/evidence to communicate the point/critique you are trying to get across?

What are you trying to communicate?

Don't. Unless they ask.

Use their video footage.

To analyze, upload to hudl (Hudl: We Help Teams and Athletes Win) or to YouTube with VideoScribbler (Video Scribbler)

1. Ask them if they are having fun.
2. Ask them if they are working hard.
3. Ask them if they understand what the coaches are trying to teach them

Don't say anything unless they ask, just tell them good job. If they ridicule themselves then you will have to figure out how to speak to them objectively while supporting them positively.

Make it a point not to talk about the game in the car ride home, I know its hard but your kid will thank you in the end. Tell your kid he did great and tried hard. Praise and encouragement go much further than criticism. You may think you are helping them with your points about what they could have done better or why did they did that in game, but it doesn't help. Try that for 2 weeks I bet your son will enjoy hockey more.
