Nearly 30 people have contacted police about François Lamarre, including 16 people police believe could be potential victims

Longueuil police have identified 16 potential new victims of a former youth hockey coach and Montreal police officer arrested on sex crime charges two weeks ago.

François Lamarre, 71, faces charges alleging he sexually abused or assaulted four boys over the course of 25 years in Greenfield Park.

Longueuil police public statement asking for victims to come forward.

Believing there are other victims, police released Lamarre’s photo after his arrest and urged anyone with information to come forward.

Nearly 30 people have since contacted the police, including 16 who investigators believe could be added as alleged victims in the case. The calls have come from Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia and the United States.

Investigators will be meeting with each person who called in the coming weeks, said Longueuil police spokesperson Patrick Barrière.

“We still believe there are more victims out there,” Barrière said. “We know it takes a lot of courage to speak out, especially considering the nature of the case. But our investigators are here to not only listen but also to support them and help them through the entire process.”

Lamarre faces charges of sexual assault, gross indecency, molestation and sexually touching a minor in connection with four complainants. The nine charges span the years from 1972 to 1997 and correspond with the Criminal Code in effect at the time.

The complainants in the case were between the ages of nine and 16 at the time of the alleged acts. They were either coached by Lamarre in Greenfield Park or knew him as a neighbour, police say.

Lamarre coached minor league hockey in the area between the 1970s and 1990s. He was known in the local hockey scene as “Frank” and lived on Springfield and Campbell Sts.

He worked for the Montreal police from 1969 to 1994.
