Question for a friend. They were told on first night of tryouts their child would placed on a 13 Pure team for the coming season. They were fine with that and based on that information from the club, signed and paid their contract in full. The next day the club decided to change the designation down to a 14A. The parent is very upset that the club changed after they paid and feels misled and wants out of the contract but the club refuses completely. Do they have any recourse?

So did they move this specific player to a different team or is the whole team now playing 14A?  Were they supposed to play 14AA?

I'm going to guess they changed it because they didn't have enough 13 year olds to do the pure birth year team.  Some kids they offered must not have signed so they had to bring in 14s.  They aren't going to want to let them out of the contract because it makes the numbers situation worse.  Do they have what they were told in writing? Was it verbal?  If it's verbal it's over.  If they have it in writing they have a little bit more of a case but unless you are willing to spend more in lawyers than it would cost them to buy out their own contract I don't think they will get anywhere.

Verbal, so that’s what I figured. So this club will force the family to stay against their will or lose all their money. Youth sports.

13 pure "AA" would have played A National anyway.

If they live close to Maryland they could register somewhere in the Potomac Region rather than the Atlantic they'd be able to avoid paying.  At least until they tried to come back to an Atlantic team ever.

Verbal contract is binding. If they verbally committed to a specific level of play that was subsequently unilaterally changed by the program without parents’ consent they are in breach. As long as nothing in writing was signed in which case the terms of that agreement need to be reviewed. I wouldn’t pay and would demand a refund under threat of taking them to small claims court. I always pay hockey fees by credit card giving me another avenue to pursue.

This happens all the time. A coach says the intent is to play AA at tryouts and they play a few scrimmages to find they don't think they'll compete at AA so they stay at A national where they normally destroy everybody. Blazers and Firebirds do it all the time. There's no verbal anything the coach makes the final decision.
