My kids are now in this new AHF instead of the EJ as a supplemental league.

I wonder if these Pittsburgh rinks will join. Would be nice to play some new teams, we generally have not played many teams from out that way.

The teams playing in bb rinks have to play in the ahf. They don't have a choice. They aren't saving hockey they are taking it over and the parents will ultimately pay the price  $$$

We will see how it goes this season 3 more years and this is their trial run at their own supplement league. We don't want the extra travel expenses but right now we don't have any other local team options. We have heard over and over and over how it will eventually become their own replacement league and that rate will go through the roof.

Youth sports especially learning programs are supposed to be about the program. Tier ll has always been a non-profit designation designed for families who want to play travel hockey and aren't able to pay the bloated prices of tier 1 which is a money making venture. Black Bear can say they are about the kids but they aren't they are buying everything up to take over youth hockey it's all about the money for them. You'll see NJ and DVHL will be gone in 2 years maybe less.

good riddance to both leagues -- same people running them for 20 years, they have not adapted -- take a look at the ridiculous breakdown of levels in NJYHL for the upcoming year

You started out on point here....yes, T2 is non profit.  It's not just "for families that do not want to pay bloated T1 prices" though. Some kids do not have the skill set to play at a higher level, but still want to play.  Yes, there are some kids that aren't T1 caliber who's mommy and daddy write a check and a club takes them so they can enter a team into a specific birth year, but those teams are generally the ones that get pounded each year.  To say T1 prices are bloated is a broad statement.  While it is more expensive, you also get more in return with properly run clubs.

I am not sure why all the hate for Black Bear.  They aren't going to raise prices so dramatically that everyone is going to be priced out. If so, they will be left holding a lot of extra ice on their hands. With the capital improvements they are making to each rink, the staff they hire to run each rink, and the programming they run in each rink, it requires money.  You want good people to work, you need to pay them properly.  Half the problem with the rinks Black Bear bought was that pricing was too low.  They could not support their own business: couldn't pay good money for people to properly run the rink, couldn't afford to maintain the facility properly (locker rooms, ice conditions, bathrooms, etc).  Seriously, look at every rink they own and think about it.  Pricing was 10-15 years in the past and we were fortunate enough to take advantage of it, each rink needed some sort of major improvement which we all complained about anyway, and were probably 1-5 years from shutting their doors.

So while prices will ultimately increase, I highly doubt they are going create a monopoly, as that will hurt them more.

As for the new league, and the sustainability of the current leagues I think it's good / healthy to have someone challenge them. How can they differentiate themselves from each other, what value / purpose does each have, etc?

But why the increase and own league? There are already too many it is blatantly obvious it's to monopolize tier ll hockey and force families who don't have alternatives into one choice. All of the NJ rinks still look the same way they did when black bear took over. There are still parent coaches running the teams. The only thing different is we have to play in the new league that most didn't want any part of. Why do tier ll teams need supplemental league games and an extended schedule why can't the AHF be a choice rather than mandatory?

The rinks look the same but they're still open for business, I think the BB hate overlooks that fact.  You do have a choice to not join AHF or EJ, play for a  club that doesn't  participate in either.  All BB rinks are part of AHF, so no choice there.  Some non-BB clubs joined AHF, so no choice there.  Other clubs stay with EJ or allow teams to find their own non-league games, they're the ones you're looking for.
