Pennsbury can’t escape costly penalties as South power play nets four

In a National League battle with potential playoff implications, the Pennsbury Falcons came out flying and Council Rock South retreated until some costly third period penalties gave the Golden Hawks life.

Warwick, PA - From the drop of the puck the Falcons looked hungry, swarming the puck in both zones, forcing Council Rock on their heels, frustrating the Golden Hawks big line of   Michael Roby, Antii Autere and Doug Lopez, who had early scoring chances broken up or blocked. By the middle of the period Pennsbury was controlling play in the offensive zone, testing freshman goalie Carson Lopez, playing for suspended Junior Jimmy Sweeney. Autere would get the puck off of a Pennsbury turnover in the South zone, caused by a nice pokecheck from defenseman Kenny Duffield, and skate behind his own net, then weave his way the length of the ice. After cutting to the slot, his first shot was stopped by Falcons goaltender Topher Seiler, but Autere would collect his rebound and pound it into the net for the games first goal with just over six minutes left in the first period. Play evened out a bit after that and both teams traded scoring opportunities, but each were unable to cash in. As time expired in the first, Pennsbury forward Beau Brusius-Yedman took a clearing pass and innocently skated one-on-one into the Golden Hawks zone. He patiently waited for a streaking Jake Machlovitz, unchecked by any South players, and Machlovitz made no mistake, firing a one-timer over Lopez’s glove ending the period in a one to one deadlock.

To start the second period South would get sustained offensive pressure leading to a tripping penalty on the Falcons Jasper Millman. The Golden Hawks top line would work the cycle well on the power play generating multiple scoring chances. Douglas Lopez would cash in after a Roby centering pass bounced off of the net and onto Lopez’s stick, and he would deposit a backhander past Seiler. The Falcons however would answer right back. Some lazy defensive zone play would allow Pennsbury to easily move the puck in the South zone, making its way to defenseman Jasper Millman at the point. He would throw an innocent looking shot towards the net which was nicely tipped by Brendan Macainsh as he cut in front of two unsuspecting South defensemen. Goaltender Lopez had no chance on the play and the game was now tied at two. That goal would fire the Falcons up and they came right back to score another as the puck came to the point once again after a nice pass from Ben Dous. Uncovered and with plenty of time, Connor Coyne would walk in and fire a shot that cruised in and put the Falcons on top just 30 seconds after they tied the game. Seiler would make great stops on South’s Matt Constantini and Michael Roby, the latter on a breakaway, keeping his team in the lead. The Falcons would up that lead at the 10:43 mark, again generating a goal with an innocent seeming point shot, this time by Justin Marlin. The puck would bounce in on Lopez who made the save, but kicked the rebound right to Brusius-Yedman at the side of the net, again uncovered by a South player. He batted in the bouncing puck and the Falcons went up 4-2, but this time it would be Council Rock that would get the late period back breaker. The teams would trade penalties late, but Council Rock would end up on the power play in the last minute of the period after a Falcons bench minor for too many men on the ice. On the rush,  Roby would take a lead pass from Kenny Duffield at the blue line and weave his way through two defenders before going in alone on Seiler. With a nifty backhand Roby would bring the Hawks within one to finish the second period.

The third period was penalty filled with Council Rock killing three consecutive penalties including a 5 on 3 advantage.   The Falcons had several good scoring chances, but could not solve Hawks goaltender Carson Lopez. Almost predictably, a frustrated Pennsbury team then would take their turn heading to the box, starting with Marlin going for roughing. Council Rock coach Joe Houk would call timeout to game plan and rest his big line for this pivotal point in the contest, and the big line would not disappoint. Again working a nice cycle, Douglas Lopez would get the puck to Roby on the half wall. Roby would curl around the top of the circle and was inexplicably allowed to walk right down the slot. After being hooked on his first shot attempt, Roby would follow with another, this time beating Seiler five-hole and tying the game. The bonus of the play was that hook on Roby’s shot attempt cost the Falcons another penalty and kept the Hawks on the power play. After getting a quick breather, Houk would put his goal scorers back out for the second half of the man advantage. A point shot from Duffield was tipped on net by Lopez and the rebound caromed to Autere who then tried to pass across to Roby at the side of the net. The pass was blocked, but came right back to Autere. With Seiler having committed to the pass, Autere was able to corral the puck and easily put it home for the improbable 5 to 4 lead with just under two minutes left to play. Pennsbury would only muster one shot in those last two minutes, with the suddenly energetic and aggressive South players getting to every loose puck before time expired. Council Rock’s power play would go an amazing 4 for 7 on the night and their penalty kill and equally impressive 6 for 6. The win would give Carson Lopez his first varsity win and the Golden Hawks possession of first place.
