Obituary

2025 Inductee Commencement Speech

For Council Rock High School, he was their Communications teacher. For Council Rock Indian players and everyone outside of the faculty who knew him, he was a silent manager for the Indian ice hockey program. This man lived for Indian ice hockey; he wasn't only a teacher, he was also a father figure who helped keep players in line and stay on the straight and narrow with their moral compass. Metz went to as many games as he could, wearing his wool Indian varsity jacket.

Metz was the ONLY one in the school district who recognized the ice hockey program as a legitimate alumni sport. He was the one who, when each player made varsity, personally handed you your letters. Every single trophy and award we collected was showcased in his office in our own personal trophy case, loaded with the hardware we won.

FINAL WORDS

I was a student in Metz's class my senior year, 1992. To say I was a handful would be a vast understatement, but I think at the end of the day, Metz was probably the only teacher who knew how to handle me, LOL. Anyway, I learned a lot from him as I became very involved with all areas of multimedia creativity in my adult life. I'm very thankful to have known Mr. Metzgar, he was a great human being. ~ Ross Porubski 1992

“Metz” was a great teacher. Allowed us to have fun but also kept it real with us students if/when we were goofing off too much. I didn’t like going to school but he and a few other teachers at CR made my time there enjoyable. I still remember him saying “it’s hoagie time Joey D” the last week of school, Sr year (1992) and he took a few of us to Lee’s Hoagies and treated us to hoagies. He will be missed. RIP Metz. ~ Joe Del Vecchio 1992

Great guy. I had him first period senior year. We watched MTV before class. Sometime he would let you take his station wagon to get bagels. I mooned the class from the control room into the studio and i think the only reason he didn’t suspend me is because i played hockey. We were wondering how he was doing at the Christmas alumni game. Great guy. You will be missed. ~ Kevin "Smitty" Smith 1991

RIP Metz. I’ll never forget after winning 88 flyers cup, he went out on the ice and tackled Brian Bradley. He loved the hockey guys. ~ Mike Kelly 1991

He was one of the finest. He really knew how to connect with his students. I loved his attitude on life and support for the ice hockey program. I remember he saved my butt one time so I could play in the CB East game. He let me cut his class to go home so I could play that night before Mr. Yates caught up with me to suspend me the next day. Funnier part of the story is Yates found my twin before me and he got the worst of it. RIP- you will always never be forgotten!! ~ Brad May 1990

He was the teacher that found a way to connect with everyone. "Mr. Metz". ~ Jerry Salerno 1997
