SEPA High School vs Club officiating rules
Topic: November 04, 2025, 11:35:32 AM
Why is it that refs at the high school level ignore the rules and allow late hits, high hits, punches to be throw, etc. I would think they would be more diligent considering the fact that you have kids from 13-19 playing against each other. I have watched players well over 6'2" absolutely burying 14 year olds that are barely 5'5". For the record...I am a ref but have never officiated a high school game.

Maybe 14yr olds shouldn't be playing HIGH SCHOOL ice hockey. My guess is little johnny was hit and daddy in the stands wasn't happy. Call your assignor to get some of those games instead of being a little beotch if you are truly a ref. At all levels from youth to college and pros calls are missed or as you prefer ignored. You are worse than the random parent who complains claiming to be a ref and doing nothing. I ref, doing so for over 20yrs from Bantam on up, that includes travel, high school, college and even did some ECHL games. Yes, at times the smaller player will get hit high and depending on the hit I will NOT call a penalty on it. A shove and a punch will get a warning before a penalty is called at times. How late is the late hit in your eyes?

What a clown response... the OP asked a fair question that could generate a good discussion.  Yet, you jumped on him/her and assumed a lot in your response.  Your #1 priority as a youth hockey official is player safety.  Might I suggest you go back and take your Level 1... seems you missed a few things.

P.S. That's my clown response to yours

Yup little ralphy skates into a bigger player and falls. daddy in the stands and coach on the bench cry for a penalty and head contact, guess what not happening. So the next time I ref a high school or any youth game I will call a penalty on every hit, every chirp, every slam of the door(which is an ejection) and every tap on a goalie after the whistle, because guess what they are penalties. Sounds fun to me, 3 on 3 hockey the entire game. As a ref you need to know what to let go and what not to let go. You may not like the way I answered it but the question was answered. No need to go back to level 1, got 7 games to work this weekend. I also found out I'm working my 1st AHL game next week, must be doing something right.
You are correct you are a clown.

Jesus - The guy said "allow late hits, high hits, punches to be throw, etc".... nothing about players bumping into each other and falling down.

Maybe re-read what the OP said versus being so defensive, you come off as the worst type of official - the one who refuses to have a conversation with a coach to explain a call and instead escalates any situation with the "I'm always right mindset, how dare you ask me to cover over and explain what I saw, talk to me again coach and you're getting a bench minor"

P.S. Congrats on the AHF, you sound very humble

Nobody fucking cares, the game isn't about you dork.  If we could replace every ref with a robot we'd do it overnight.

AHF, what is that? The only thing I know about them is from all the cry baby bitching on here. I have not refed an AHF game yet. Maybe you should reread as I said AHL. Just in case you are unaware what the AHL is.

American Hockey League
The AHL (American Hockey League) is a professional ice hockey league in North America that serves as the primary developmental league for the NHL (National Hockey League). It is the second highest level of professional hockey in North America, following the NHL. The AHL plays a crucial role in developing players for the NHL and participates in the NHL's draft lottery.

I talk too many coaches during games. I have a great rapport with coaches and players. Coaches, players and most parents are happy to see me assigned to their games. Do you know how many parents want a high hit or late hit called when it's not a high or late hit? Punches to the head I will call every time, punch to the shoulder or arm depending on the situation I'll give a warning. Like I said we can call everything, do you know how easily it would be to eject just about every player for abuse of official or for unsportsmanlike. Call a penalty on a kid for slash and it could easily turn into 3 more penalties equaling 4 and gone. Again, as a ref you need to know what to let go and what not to let go.

For the record, I was not whining because my kid was blown up. It happens and I prepared them all to give and take the hits. Saying a 14 year old shouldn't play high school hockey instead of an official enforcing the rules is ignorant. Anyone with a little hockey knowledge can watch SEPA high school hockey and see the difference in officiating between club and school. I've been part of games, coaching, playing, and as a ref where things escalate because dirty plays are allowed. When players know they can get away with things they push and push to see how far they can go.

I appreciate the keyboard cowboy act. I wish you all the best in the AHL, congrats!

Typo on my part... I'll own that and take a lap as I meant AHL.

There are proper steps in reporting officials you feel are not doing their job properly, which you should know being an official yourself. You would probably have more sway over joe blow parent. By SEPA I assume that would be the Inter-County Scholastic Hockey League (ICSHL). Favoritism in the area is a huge problem in that league based on where the official graduated from or who their rival was. It was that way back when I was in college at West Chester and refed that league. I don't see that ever changing. I hated doing those games, the student sections were crazy, throwing things at the other school's student section and onto the ice. Multiple games ended with empty stands.

I will be 1st to admit I get a little defensive of my fellow officials. As you should know the bashing and abuse of officials in all sports have gotten ridiculous the past 6-7yrs, so I do apologize if I was a bit rash. 2 weeks ago while doing a junior's game my partner called a penalty and ended up justly tossing a parent in the 1st period. After the game we went to leave, and the parent was still sitting in the parking lot in his truck. The players all left with the team on their bus 30 min before we left. Note to officials: Always leave the rink or field together and always after everyone has left, we wait 30 min after the locker rooms empty to leave.  The rink ended up calling the police and formally trespassing him to make him leave. I've turned officiating into a lively hood between ice hockey and baseball, been doing both for since my teen years.
Side note: baseball parents are crazier than hockey parents are.
