Skating, skating, skating. Then more skating. And when your kid is one of the best skaters at the rink, then give her or him a stick. You can't be creative or have flow if you are not in complete control of your feet, every edge, every direction.

The time factor is over rated, but the premise is right. What separates kids is skating. the good skaters stand out at all levels. And so do the bad ones...

Could you imagine a team of kids who only started hockey after taking skating lessons for 1 or 2 years, on the ice 8-10 hours a week?

They'd have 0 players because all the kids would have quit after 2 weeks.

Kids will quit anyway. Sticking a kid in a rink until they hit puberty is fine. Once their social lives take off, most of these AAA get burnout and will quit. The kids that played multiple sports will still be playing and improve greatly after puberty. Maybe 25% of kids that played AAA at Pee Wee and below stick with hockey after bantam. It is a fact. Search the web to find it! LOSERS!!!!
