I know their is non-profit clubs but I'm pretty sure the rinks they play at are open to make a profit. Are you aware that not all clubs are owned by the rink they play in? I know it's hard to believe that rinks are in business to make money. That is like me going for a business loan and the bank asking for my business plan and me saying O I'm running it at cost with no profit. I am not sure you understand what non-profit means. Non-profits can turn profits and most do. You have rules on how to use profits.  All profits are put back into the company. You can use profits for bonuses to employees but that is filed under compensation/payroll. You would use the money to establish certain cash on hand levels allowed by the IRS. All other profits are put into the business. So in the case of a hockey rink you would update the interior, redo ice surface, redo gym, offer scholarships to players, use profits to help with tournament fees or keep down tuition increases. In my opinion this is the way all youth sports should be run. Yes people would get paid for their coaching and to be on the board, but money would be put back toward the kids. Too many youth sports organizations in all sports (including hockey) are initially started to help the kids, but then greed takes over once people see how much money they can make. Non-profit is not some evil communist structure. It is set-up to help put money back into the company and limit taxes. But rules are in place to make sure money is spent on the kids!

I think you should buy some land, build a non-profit rink and see how it goes. My Aunt in Florida runs a non-profit animal shelter. She is running herself on E all the time trying to find sponsors, holding fundraisers and other things it takes to run a real non-profit. Running a non-profit is not as cut and dry or as easy as one thinks. Do employees get paid, sure? Does she, not as much as she should. When money runs low from sponsors and fundraisers she takes no pay, she dog sits for people for she can have money in her pocket. NO rink owner is going to go through that when they are for profit business. The last rink I can think of that ran things for as cheap as possible to make hockey affordable was the Rink in Whitehall and guess what, they are no more.

I just love Spring Hockey! My favorite thing about this time of year: JO parent posting how many G/A/Pts their little precious had at a AAA tournament that was in reality a low AA/High A tournament. Hey JA, the best kids in your age group were playing higher level tournaments or other sports. To top it off the kids team didn't even win! To the parent I say this: You kid is a AAA player (or so you claim). Act accordingly!

My kid is a goalie and played on a Spring AA team years ago, he has only been on A or B teams prior. Our team had 4 A players(1G,1D,2F) and 12 AA players, we went into a AA tournament in Nashville where we faced a couple AAA teams. The one AAA team advertised on their site that they are a competitive AAA team playing in top AAA tournaments only. After beating us with my kid in net in the playoffs 5-0(my kid gave up 3 in a period and half) you'd think they won the Stanley Cup the way they all acted(coaches/parents & players). Karma bit them hard because one of the other AAA teams that was ranked in the top 20 that year beat them by 7 in the championship game. The tournament had 3 AAA and 4 AA teams. We lost both games against AAA teams and won both the games verses AA teams. The 1st AAA team we played beat us 8-5, my son went in 2min into the 2nd period down 5-0. They beat the 2 AA teams 3-1(he gave up 0 goals) & 4-0(combined shutout).  You never know what you will face when going into a Spring tournament. We were very proud of our boys and playing the tougher teams really helped my kid in net. After that spring he never played below A National, was on the fringe of AA twice and was the leading netminder on his teams every year since.

When your travel club puts together Spring teams and your kid tries out figuring he might be on the A team then makes the AA team with the coaches kid and then goes to tournaments and out plays his kid, it means something. My kid was put in a cycle of B then A and the coaches/club officers kid is locked at AA every year without even going to all the evals, it means something. This tournament was few years ago and the 4 A players from that team still talk about it. How well they played and yet never get a real shot at AA for their club. Going into his final year he knows that he won't be making a living playing that's why he already has talked to Navy recruiters and wants to go into law enforcement after that. Like I said you never know what you will get in these tournaments and knowing how the team played against the AAA teams we were proud of them, all of them. Heck, how many in season tournaments do you go to were teams play down and parents act like their kids are awesome for beating on teams lower than them? It happens just about every year.

NJ air force national guard has 100% tuition waiver for college  at state schools with pretty good signing bonuses if he is going in that direction.

Air Force is the direction I wanted him to go. Since the 1st time he stepped onto his uncles charter/party boats he wanted to be in the Navy. His 10-15yr plan is to go into the Navy and become a Master-at-Arms. I told him if he really likes it go for the retirement at 20yrs. He is currently taking Protective Services at his Tech school and the Navy recruiter thinks he is a perfect candidate for the MA course. Thank you for that info though.
