Cost of Hockey
Topic: February 03, 2025, 02:18:56 PM
I am convinced that you can only advance in Hockey if you have the money to do so or if you refinance your house or max out your credit cards to pay for it especially at the AAA level. It is just way to expensive. Equipment, club, private sessions, spring/summer Hockey, travel, hotels, Gas etc I do not know how people play with few kids can do it. When is they price going to go down?

lack of community rinks (i.e. Minn, Mass, etc) and letting any teams be called AAA in Atlantic District (looking at you Whalers, Titans, Devils (last good back in 2000), Saints, Phantoms, Generals, 87's, Flyers Elite, W-B)

imagine 6 Tier 1 teams in Atlantic League (like it was in it's glory years) - Caps, Colonials, Jr Flyers, Avs, Gulls, Chiefs/Lil Flyers/PHC (you choose) -- all that talent pushed down to Tier 2 would be immense

it is in the interest of these Rink owned clubs to call themselves AAA, fear of missing out

It's 20% about hockey and 80% about business.

You have to find the right AA club to get the most for your money where your kid can develop. 95% of AAA is a waste of money locally.

Exactly.

AAA teams: look at all the AAA teams a 2 hour drive from where you are now. If you arent top 10 in that grouping, why are you still spending thousands on these out of town tournaments to lose some more. You can do that and be back home the same night

Spend the time and $ on developing your team.

AA hockey in AHF travels almost as much at AAA THF teams. The entire system is broke. It is about money only. BB came in and gave other rinks the green light to charge high fees. AAHA is useless and when will they make a decision on limiting AAA teams? I will tell you when: NEVER! If AAHA tries to pull AAA charters rinks will sue them. It is a lost cause and USA Hockey is worthless as well! Ice Hockey became a sport for the rich once Private Equity firms started buying up rinks! Game over unless you live in Minnesota!

Stop worrying about where your kid will go with hockey, and let them just play and have fun - if they show promise, or are exceedingly gifted - try to avoid the grifters that lurk everywhere, and hope you are lucky enough to have someone genuine guiding you.  It would not hurt if you yourself are an ex hockey person of some renown or have had deep connections with, well, people who are connected.  Really, all things being equal, that is the difference maker, many times.
good luck, and take my advice, do something else... but if you are going to do it dont do it here.

A lot of AAA kids will be going to AA especially for the 13/14U AA. High School comes into play with some kids going to private High schools with a big price tag so quite a few of talented players land at the Tier 2 level. So hockey being at a high price will help out the AA level. Teams can complete for Nationals at the Bantam Major 14U level i believe.
