Long Island Travel Hockey Prices
Topic: January 28, 2022, 06:14:28 AM
I am looking for rough prices on what to expect for youth travel hockey. I have 3 young kids and I would like to get them into travel programs and I want to make sure that I have the finances to make it happen.

The thing is I can never get a straight answer.

One forum, older post, different site, said that it could cost between $6,000-$8,000 per year. That seems reasonable to what I expected at least.

A peer of mine whose son played with the Gulls can't get me a straight answer either. One time it was $10,000. One time it was $14,000. I am sure he's rounding up a bunch and he's calculating all travel and hotel costs.

I would love for the most detailed response from any of you, but for simplicity I just want to see how much 1 year annual cost to be on the Gulls let's say. I don'tt necessarily need unless you have a breakdown, the cost of all the other things - like equipment, training, hotels, etc.

I say the Gulls cuz it's a premier club on Long Island.
So I assume the most expensive of sorts.

And while I am speaking of Long Island only, I doubt the prices differ that much in other similar areas like maybe Boston, parts of Michigan and Toronto or Montreal.

I heard these are expensive as well.

So what a I expected here?
Does $7,000 a year sound right?

Any stories would be helpful. Thank you

First off, are you being quoted those prices as per player cost or a total for all 3? Second, what ages are they?

I am just asking what is the typical price for top end travel hockey.

I am getting mixed #'s from different resources I follow or have.

I can understand why, but maybe a forum like this can get a better insight for me.

Maybe I can even get someone from Long Island to tell me their exact cost.

Not including hotels, gas, equipment, side trainers, etc.
How much is a one year roster spot for these AAA and AA clubs?

I imagine it is like U8 or U10 is like $3000-$5000

Every 2 years or so it climbs probably $5,000 to $7,000.
Or is it even MORE!

I mean, I am willing to pay a price but I hate the secrecy and I hate the games played.

There shouldn't be any secrecy. Almost every club posts their fees on their website. Most probably haven't updated for the 22-23 season yet, but the current season info should be there. Costs don't increase that much year to year. Just remember, these are base costs for the club for things like ice costs, league fees, coaches. Things like tournaments and travel costs are not part of this and are usually paid separately. Prior to the season starting, most teams figure out what tournaments they will be doing and estimate a per player cost that will cover these. The manager usually collects the money then pays for the tournaments out of this pool. Travel costs are then just paid by the parents. This can be why you could be getting people telling you different numbers.
That being said you should not be paying $3000 for U8. Most clubs are $1500 or less for mites. Also, mites aren't playing a bunch of tournaments and probably go away for 1 one of them so travel costs should be minimal.
Are your kids just starting to play hockey? If so, find a good Tier 2 club and that has a reputation for good coaching. There is no reason to pay more than $2500 for 8-10 year old is they are just starting. You are better off spending the extra money on private/semi-private skating lessons.

If you are paying 2000 for tuition then expect to pay around 5000-6000 total per player in total by the end of the season. The league fees don't include tournament and nonleague dues before the travel expenses. Expect about 1k per tournament in hotel, travel and food alone. A lot of people make vacations out each tournament too.

Why the hell is their base T2 fee so high? Who is paying $6500 for that?

bills on Long Island can be from $3k (Great Neck) through 10K (Gulls and Jr Isles). These are tuition based only, not including extras like tournaments, showcases, and coaching fees. Most organizations are between 4.5k and 7k for tier II & III levels.
