Author Topic: VIDEO: HUGE Suspension for Yorkton Terriers Hockey Player  (Read 11418 times)

Description:
The SJHL governing body has laid down landmark disciplinary action aimed at bringing attention to how intent to injure penalties will be handled going forward.

UPDATE: 9/30/2019

A video has surfaced, (below) which shows Yorkton Terrier hockey player Greg Mulhall displaying complete and total disregard for the health of goalie Berk Berkeliev. Berkliev suffered a concussion, lost several teeth, and also received 10 stitches in his face and 8 stitches to the back of his head to close both lacerations.

The Yorkton Terriers were quick to sever ties with Mulhall, stating that Mulhall had been released from their program effective immediately. In conjunction with the Yorkton decision to release the player, the SJHL swiftly followed suit announcing Mulhall has been banned from playing hockey in their league permanently.

WARNING NSFW - Video contains extremely loud audio/profanity

Original Story

You may or may not have seen this brutal hit from an SJHL, (Saskatchewan Junior A Hockey League) game this past Saturday night. If you haven't, now you will. The SJHL Yorkton Terriers were playing the Melville Millionaires. Yorkton down by four with just under 13 minutes to play were shorthanded. As Yorkton attempted to go on a shorthanded break, Melville goalie Berk Berkeliev came out of his crease to clear a missed pass from the top of the hash marks. Terriers player, Greg Mulhall sees he has no play on the puck and instead of peeling off he takes a few more strides and leaves his feet to take out the Melville goalie. An ensuing brawl took place and several penalties were handed out. When play resumed Melville goalie Berkeliev was replaced as he left the game due to injuries sustained from the hit. Greg Mulhall will serve a 25 game suspension for his action. Here is a link the archived GAMESHEET

That shouldn't be a suspendable punishment. He should be expelled from playing ever again.

I'd be willing to bet this kid can't give one good reason why he did that except maybe the excuse the goalie was out of his crease. There's no place for this in any league, youth or adult.

cmon the kid wasn't even making an attempt to play the puck. He wanted to kill the goalie.

I don't know who wrote the description in initial post but it doesn't match the video at all.  The player DID have a play on the puck, he nearly got there. He DIDN'T "take a few more strides". In fact, he didn't take ANY strides after the goalie hit the puck.  He also DIDN'T leave his feet to hit the goalie.  The impact with the goalie caused his feet to go up in the air. I am not even convinced he tried to hit the goal at all.  All that being said he did make contact with the goalie and that is a huge no no at all levels of hockey... but as far as Junior Hockey goes... I have seen worse.

The skater needs to pull up because he's going full speed. He had no play and he did take two more extra strides before lunging into the goalie. It is definitely intent to injure with no effort to avoid contact. Playing at Jr level and doing that is bush league, it's not 1975.

Goalies are not fair game, although they should be if they are going to come out like this. A player has every right to the puck, however, and if they collide, so be it! Not even a minor penalty should have been assessed!

Anyone who thinks that the player had a play on the puck and didn't take extra strides and shouldn't be assessed a penalty needs to leave hockey now. You are no longer welcome. These types of hits are no longer part of the game and frankly never should have been to begin with. His intent was clear and with this new video it's also clear the kid has no respect for anything or anyone. Good riddance to him and anyone like him from this beautiful game
