FALCONS PREVAIL OVER NESHAMINY ON RIVALRY NIGHT

The Pennsbury Falcons celebrating with the Gannon Cup.

It is the rivalry that goes back many, many years – Pennsbury vs Neshaminy. In almost every sport and every year, it is a contest that both sides look forward to and both sides want to win. They want to win for their team and for their school.

BRISTOL, PA. - This night was no different. While the Thanksgiving Eve Pennsbury vs Neshaminy game goes back many years, this year was only the second annual Gannon Cup. The Gannon Cup is named for Patrick Gannon, a Neshaminy Ice Hockey player who passed away three years ago at the age of 13. Tonight the teams also remembered Phil Oseredzuk, another Neshaminy Ice Hockey player who lost his life last Spring at the age of 16. Both boys died as a result of tragic accidents and donated their organs through the Gift of Life. In addition to the game on the ice, the clubs also partnered off the ice to raise money for this amazing charity. This night means a lot to many people in our hockey community, as both Pennsbury and Neshaminy players have been teammates of both Phil and Pat. After a pre-game ceremony, it was time to hit the ice.

As the game began, it was immediately apparent that both teams were going to fight hard to be the winners of the Gannon Cup. The first period started with strong offensive pressure by Neshaminy, which was met by stellar goaltending by Pennsbury sophomore Topher Seiler. The first period almost ended scoreless, but Senior Jake Machlovitz was able to find the back of the net with less than one minute left in the period. In spite of being outshot in the first 9 to 4, the Falcons ended the period leading 1-0.

Almost as soon as the puck dropped in the second, Machlovitz again was able to get the puck past Redskins netminder Brian Nelson on a pass from Senior Beau Yedman. Even though they were down 2-0, Neshaminy didn’t give up. Their special teams scored the next two goals, one short handed and one power play, to tie it up at 2-2. In what would be the theme of the night, the Falcons scored two more goals within the last minute of the second period. The second ended with the Falcons ahead 4-2.

It had been a hard hitting and fast paced game and both teams looked a little sluggish in the third period, but neither one was giving up. The Redskins got within one with 6 minutes left in the game, but the Falcons were able to shut them down and finish the night with a 4-3 victory to take home the Gannon Cup.

The players of the game were Senior Jake Machlovitz with a Hat Trick and 3 points for the game and Senior Beau Yedman who had one goal and two assists and also had three points. Sophomore goaltender Topher Seiler saved 26 of 29 shots, including a couple highlight reel breakaway saves.

LOOSE PUCKS:
The Falcons are looking ahead to next week when they play North Penn. They faced North Penn last season in both their playoff and Flyers Cup first round games. While both of those meetings went to North Penn, the Falcons are aiming for a different result this time around. If that game is anything like tonight’s, they will be ready and up for the challenge.
