People have to stop calling children "elite" anything. Talk about handing out participation trophies. Even at 15, 16 yo, we're talking about kids, still developing physically and mentally. How much potential talent is absolutely lost because we've routed the early-bloomers (and their patents' egos) into "elite" tracks and essentially give up on development of so many other kids. And how many kids and parents start placing bets on hockey taking them down some road, paying for letters to "ensure" that, when their best bang for the buck would be to put that money toward college in the first place.
The best thing for youth hockey would be to assign kids to rinks/teams based on zip code through 14U. Do away with tryouts. Take away all the letters and don't even think about starting to identify "talent" until the majority of kids are past puberty. Anything other than that is paying for letters for kids, to help parents fill some void in their own life.
You're 14 years old. You're not "elite" anything. What a disservice to let any kid think that.
