MERCY RULE CAPS OFF 2019 ROCK CUP

Anticlimactic. That’s the word I would use to sum up the 15th annual Rock Cup game, played between Council Rock South and Council Rock North at the Revolution I’ve Gardens.

WARWICK, PA. - North has had a tough go of it so far this season, as they knew they would, having lost every game this season by the 10-goal mercy rule, and this game was no different. On the other side, South has not won a game yet this season either, but was clearly the more talented team, not to mention they had 7 more players dressed than the shorthanded North squad.

Things started out spirited enough as the puck went both ways early and there were some tempers flaring after the first shift, emotions boiling over from days of anticipation.

It wouldn’t take long after that for South to assert themselves as the dominant team when Matt Constantini banged home a rebound that North goaltender Rex Goldberg seemed to lose in his feet, just over two minutes in. Less than a minute later, Billy Harrelson scored and South could taste the blood in the water. In short order we were treated to the Michael Roby Jr. show as the Council Rock South sophomore put on a clinic with three goals before the end of the period, a couple in spectacular fashion. He dazzled with his great hands all night as he and his linemates seemed to toy with North defenders at times. Sandwiched within the hat trick was a goal by Jeremy Purcell and South led 6-0 after one period of play. At that point the game was all but over as the life had completely left a demoralized Council Rock North team. South goalie Jimmy Sweeney faced 10 shots, none which really tested him, but it was Goldberg who was the story, facing 28 shots in the period, each more difficult than the next. He performed admirably throughout the game despite the constant onslaught and was the bright spot for North on an otherwise dismal night.

The second period was a little more even, at least in the scoring column, as South only scored two in the frame, one each by Kyle Schneider and David Vergules. The dedicated North crowd did get something to cheer about however as senior Vlad Litvinov motored up the ice as time expired in the second period. He cut across the top of the circles and lasered a shot, high to the blocker side, past South goalie Carson Lopez, who had relieved Sweeney after the first period, with 1.9 seconds to go. The North crowd started a sarcastic ’We Believe’ chant that gave everyone a smile as the period ended with their team down 8-1.

BOX SCORE - CR North Indians vs CR South Golden Hawks 11 27 2019

The third period was over almost as soon as it started, with South tallying three in the first four minutes to make the game an official blowout. David Mueller would score two and Antii Autere would empty the benches and start the celebration for the team in white. Rex Goldberg would end up seeing 52 shots in all and will probably be twitching in his sleep throughout the holiday weekend. Michael Roby Jr. would finish with five points to pace the Golden Hawks as they would get their first win of the SHSHL season, although not in very dramatic fashion.
