Author Topic: NCAA Approves Sweeping Recruiting Timeline Changes  (Read 3384 times)

NCAA legislation approved today by the Division I Council will significantly change the recruiting calendar for college hockey teams and players. This issue has been on the table for the better part of two years, and was first discussed by CHN at length last November.

The most significant change regards verbal commitments, which now will not be allowed until August 1 of a player's junior year of high school.

While the National Letter of Intent locks a recruit in to a school, that doesn't come until a player's senior year of high school. However, teams could give a "verbal commit" offer to a player at any time. Over the years, college hockey has seen players verbally commit at younger and younger ages.

Another change involves the timing of when coaches can contact players.

A big nothing burger for just about anyone reading this board.
While there may be some that eventually play in college, commitments made before a year or two of playing at the junior level are rare.  It is good that they are trying to stop the early verbal commitments in reality most hockey players need more time to develop before they are ready to be recruited.
