Black Bear Rankings vs My Hockey Rankings
Topic: December 26, 2023, 02:45:29 PM
More childish behavior coming out of Murry Gunty and Black Bear (MG/BB). Refusing to give Gamesheet data to My Hockey Rankings (MHR) because Gamesheet has an exclusive agreement with MHR for data. All MG/BB wants to do is control the rankings (through their own ranking site) to get BB teams ranked higher. MG/BB have already ruined youth hockey in PA, NJ, NY and CT by forcing BB owned teams into BB owned leagues. Tier I league THF is far inferior to AYHL, but MG/BB does not care. They care bout 3 things in this order: 1. Money 2. Power 3. Money. They do not care about the kids and their families. They want to control the entirety of youth hockey on the east coast! Their KRACH ratings make no sense and no where near as accurate as MHR. While MHR aren't perfect they are superior to the crap  MG/BB put out. Due to where I live, I am forced to put my kid in a BB rink which forces us into the crappy THF league. How I hate how MG/BB is ruining youth hockey!!!!!

MHR not goo either. It is all a money grab! Let kids play hockey without all the adults trying to scam the parents. Hockey was so much better when kids played for fun. My kid has more fun practicing than playing games. He said coaches yell a lot less during practice and he gets to touch the puck more, try different moves and trash talk with his friends when a great play is made.  More practice, less games= more fun for kids. More practice, less games= less $ for BB and MHR! Makes perfect sense to look for more practice and less games. I am a genius!

If that is the case then why is the Rocket Sports Group which is not owned by Black Bear involved in that league? Neither their rinks nor the organization yet they are in that league vs the AY. As are a number of other organizations in CT.

Looks to me like people are fighting and making statements that are as usual, not particularly accurate.
I do find MHR's not particularly accurate at times. A highly ranked team can't even play a team ranked lower than 60 spots roughly without it dinging them automatically because of the spread. The fact even if they blow them out 10-0, they can't over come the spread as MHR limits the goal differential to a maximum of 7. It does make coaches too concerned about rankings imo.

Rockets tend to have the highest ranked teams in New Jersey every year at the Tier 1 level. Just sayin

Rockets are member’s because they need games for their second teams at many levels. 18, 16, 15U and some weaker youth teams. The teams they have that are highly ranked only play a partial schedule and those games are against only the top THF teams.

I find the whole situation a head scratcher as well.

Agree that MHR is by no means perfect, but it does serve it's purpose particularly as a barometer for whom I schedule my son's teams against. Almost everyone wants to see competitive games, and a blowout either way is usually not alot of fun to watch.

Have found that it helps bring the picture into focus when there is a ~3 point difference in a team's MHR(85 MHR vs. an 82 MHR) on whether the game will be competitive or a blowout. The more games these scores are based on, the more accurate they also tend to be as well.

While I realize it's brand new(and hopefully they will make improvements to it), I have no clue what to do with Black Bear's HPR(Hockey Power Rankings). As a clear example look at the link below:

16U Tier 2 Rankings - Hockey Power Rankings

According to the top ranking for 16U Tier 2; the 1st place Metro Jets have a 54 Krach score and the 3rd place Lake County Vipers have a 9 Krach score. Does that mean that they are 6 times better than them even though they have an almost identical record and MHR scores?

Then you go further down the list to see that teams ranked #44 through #327 have the same exact Krach score??!??

Good luck scheduling a game if you are looking for parity. I can certainly see where Krach scores serve a purpose for the NCAA rankings and bowl seedings, but for scheduling games it's more or less useless.

While I there is a value in having a 2nd resource for scheduling games, Black Bear should stick to what they know and let someone without a conflict of interest manage this if they are really that concerned with "keeping at home with their families and local clubs as long as possible" as they lay out in their mission statement(link below).

When I schedule a non league game I can give a crap about their rankings in MHR or HPR. I look for teams we don't play during the season, they get priority. I will only accept teams in our league as a last resort just to fill the spot.

If your nl games are recorded publicly mhr will include them in their api scrapes and they will count for or against your overall ranking.

Black Bear's message about MHR and its use is right on the money.  I am not saying that Krach is right for youth hockey.   MHR should be used as a guideline only and not to make decisions.  How can you have Team A make the playoffs for districts over Team B, if Team B beat Team A 3 times?  It is because Team A made their schedule to optimize the algorithm.  It does not make a ton of sense for Gamesheets to have an exclusive, and it does not make sense for MHR to have conflict with BB.   So, now all of the rankings are worthless.   The main issue is the coaches/organizations who are slaves to MHR and trying to optimize their schedule so that they can be the 30th team instead of the 45th ... when the kids are 11 years old.
