“What size youth hockey goalie blocker/catcher do I need?” Understanding how to properly fit youth hockey goalie blocker/catcher

Hockey Goalie Blocker/Catcher - The palm and fingers of both catchers and blockers should fit like loose winter gloves. Arm pads should fit under the cuffs of both the blocker and catcher (approximately 2-3 inches under) without inhibiting flexibility. When fitting your hand to the palm of the blocker glove, it is recommended that there be no more than 1/4 inch between the tip of the goalie’s finger and the top of the finger stalls in the glove. Any more room will not allow the goalie to grip and control the stick properly, and will cause the blocker to tilt or wobble on the goalie’s hand when holding the stick. As a guide, the cuff of the blocker glove should extend one to two inches over the bottom of the arm protection on your chest and arm pads. Also, most players don’t like gloves that fit so snug that their fingers feel cramped, so make sure there is a little wiggle room.

When choosing a catcher glove, the most important consideration is to make sure that the goalie can actually close the glove. To do this, the goalie’s fingers need to wrap far enough around the break of the glove to give him/her enough leverage to close the glove properly. As a guideline, we recommend that there be no more than 1/2 inch of space between the tip of the goalie’s finger and the end of the finger stall in the catch glove. Adults with stronger hands can get away with having a bit more space in the finger stalls, but kids aged 13 and under should keep to this guide as much as possible. To determine if the glove fits, open the backhand portion of the glove and determine goalie’s finger position in the stalls. ALWAYS TRY ON THE BLOCKER AND CATCHER WEARING CHEST PROTECTOR
