I heard he is going to Red Bank Generals this year Also heard that when the list of coaches went to teams, he wasn’t on it and then showed up on the website. Anyone know who or what he is coaching?

He is also the new head coach for the Premier team for the Jersey Shore Whalers. He runs the Raiders spring/summer program as well. My son has done Raiders in the past, as well as other camps and clinics with Oktay. He is a great coach.

So he’s going to coach a team at The Whalers and The Generals? Maybe different levels but isn’t that a conflict of interest and what’s to prevent him from taking kids the next year from RB to JS?

Not sure. The RB team he is listed for is the 16U independent team. Whalers is tier 1 USPHL out of Howell.  Different leagues entirely so not sure how that all works.

Midget Independent 16U AAA means Red Bank is rostering an Elite team to play a AAA independent schedule. They can still play anybody including AA and A but they don't have membership in NJYHL or AYHL. Without seeing the 2019-20 AAHA approved Tier 1 membership list it's safe to assume Red Bank is ether not applying for or already know they aren't approved for tier 1. For the Whalers he's listed as Premier Jr. which isn't a conflict of interest as Red Bank doesn't have a Jr program.

Red Bank may very well continue applying for tier 1 membership. Most newly formed elite teams which are already tier ll are normally denied membership. When they're denied they are not allowed to advertise as tier 1 or AAA which is why most advertise as "elite". The benefits are subjective. One thing is certain, the price to play at that level is the same as tier 1. Take a look at myhockeyrankings for whichever birth year of some of the independent teams you are familiar with. Although they are not tier 1 members MHR still ranks them with tier 1. A lot of the tourney's they enter are not AAA level and their competition is AA or A. A lot of their independent schedule is not AAA level it all depends on your scheduler.

That's why it is subjective.

Independent clubs can advertise and say as they please without penalty because there is no oversight. You very well may be registering to play elite because you like the coach. You might be registering under the guise of a presumed higher level of competition. Some just have the money to pay for the label their kid will have.

In the end, It's all in what is being sold and how they sell it, if you buy it the clubs mission is accomplished.

This memo was distributed by the AAHA last season to try and curb overpricing. It didn't change anything.
