Summer Camp Input
Topic: February 03, 2020, 06:48:17 PM
USA Hockey magazine is out and has summer camps advertised.  Anyone ever try one of these away camps and care to give any input?  I thought it would be nice to go out with my family and make it an extended vacation.  Like that Heartland Hockey Camp in Minnesota looks like fun but would like him to get good coaching as well.  Thought about Lake Placid too with CAN AM.  Thanks in advance.

CAN AM historically is a great camp, never been but constantly hear great reviews. If you want to stay local (DVHL area), I spoke directly to Greg Carter's group who is holding a camp at PNY Arena this summer. My biggest concern with local camps run by big organizations is if they are actually being run by local coaches and just carrying the name. Greg Carter confirmed they are sending a team of coaches from their organization to the rink to run the camp. You can always call the camp to request credentials of the staff.

Penn state summer camp is great. The kids love it and we get some much needed time to ourselves during the 3 day camp in Happy Valley. https://gopsusports.com/sports/2018/8/8/camps-m-hockey-camp-html.aspx

Honestly, unless you are looking to get your kid out of the for house for 5-6 hours a day for a week, I would skip camps and find a private instructor. My son has gotten more out of a half hour lesson than a full week camp. Most camps full day camps will cost 300-500 for a week. I guess that number increases a lot if it a sleep over camp. I have found really good instructors who will do 30 minutes for $50-100. The guy we use most often will have no more 4 kids on the ice at once and it ends up being like $40 per kid.
Much better value for you dollar.
