According to crews, the fire was at a house on Fisher near Mack, which is southwest of Moross. The fire has since been extinguished.
First responding officers arrived within two minutes of the 911 call at 7:51 a.m. The first fire truck arrived within four minutes of that call.
The boys are 9-year-old Logan Connolly and 11-year-old Walter B Connolly. The Grosse Pointe Public School System said they were students at Richard Elementary School.
The boys, who were home alone at the time called their mom when the house started filling up with smoke. That's when she came back and found their home in flames.
Officials say the two boys were found in the upstairs bedroom during the three-alarm fire.
Neighbors say they were alerted to a woman's screams around 8 a.m., and they tried to get in the house but the flames pushed them back.
On Mondays, schools in the district don't start until 9:05 a.m., which is why the kids were home from school.
They still don't know the cause, but Michigan State Police, the ATF and local officials are investigating.
