question for all: the old age debate of playing time

What is "fair" ice time for players on a competitive travel team? Is there a standard? 45 minutes of game time and 3 lines of forwards and 3 defensive pairs

Thoughts?

Agree. Once they are at 14U and they are high A AA or AAA every coach turns to their depth chart. Organized lines are setup by skill and ice time is determined by which o line scores most and which d shuts down the other team.

Please. Their should not be equal playing time at High A, AA, AAA travel from Bantam on.  What's next participation awards in travel hockey. My kids been on both sides of it and it teaches you to work harder to get more shifts etc.  What are they going to do when they get in the work place cry that it's not equal and fair.  Parents that complain about this have no clue on the benefit of this for their child in the long run.  Teach them to work harder to reach goals

They are fine with it as they know the benefit of teaching kids to work harder to get those extra shifts and PP time etc.  I take it your kid didn't make AA and now you have a beef?

Life lessons are better then participation awards but most crazy adults today would have a trophy or ribbon instaed of preparing kids for life.

I think once the kids are playing for wins and losses, there should be no expectation of equal playing time.  Equal playing time is an in house concept.  Other travel sports work the same way and if you think hockey is bad, you should look into other travel sports.  Football, where in house doesn’t exist, kids are only guaranteed 10 plays a game.  In baseball, there are no guarantees.  Life isn’t fair.  Why set the wrong expectation at such an early age?
